Class Descriptions 

Iluminar Aerial provides weekly aerial technique, dance and fitness classes for kids and adults starting at age 5 and up. 

 

Air Stars (ages 5-7 years) - Air Kids (ages 8-12 years) Air Teens (ages 12-17 years) 

Young aerialists will be introduced to the basics of flying on many different types of equipment including silks, trapeze, lyra, rope, and hammocks. Students will gain upper body strength, agility and flexibility in this hour long class focusing on safety and body awareness. Students will soar to new heights with this exciting new form of exercise!

Air Essentials for Youth (GROUPON ONLY: ages 5-17 years)

Our groupon friendly class will quickly introduce students to the world of aerial during their 4 class session. Young aerialists will be introduced to the basics of flying on the aerial silks and slings in this mini session. Students will gain upper body strength, agility and flexibility in this hour long class focusing on safety and body awareness. Students will soar to new heights with this exciting new form of exercise!

AirFIT (ages 12+)

Experience a whole new way of working out with the joy of flying while developing increased strength, agility, and flexibility in the vertical space.  AirFIT, designed just for teens and adults of all shapes, ages and sizes,encompasses simple aerial techniques and conditioning drills to sculpt and shape the body.  Work out time should be fun, so spread some wings and come fly with us.

Air Essentials for Teens/Adults: Beginner & Intermediate (ages 12+)

This is the perfect beginner and intermediate technique class for those students wanting to go the next step in their aerial education. Basic technique will be taught on a variety of equipment including silks, trapeze, lyra, rings, rope and hammocks. According to the skill level of the class, students will learn basic mounts and dismounts on each type of equipment focusing on safety and body awareness. Class will progress with basic beginner to intermediate skills and transitions for a broader experience on each apparatus. After completing a full 12 week session of the Beginner level, students may move into the intermediate level class.*Students who have never taken an aerial class before must first take the beginner level class for a complete 12 week session.

Silk Technique (Ages 12+)

Level 1

In this intermediate silks technique class, students are becoming more comfortable in the air and  will engage in learning intermediate wraps and skills. Beginner inversions in the fabric will be introduced as well as skills from the double foot lock. Students must have their double foot lock in the air to enroll in this class. Prerequisite: 12 week session of Air Essentials or Iluminar teacher approval.

Level 2

In this upper intermediate level class, students are becoming more comfortable with inversion wraps like thigh hitch and same/opposite side catcher’s locks and will be introduced to s-wraps and helicopters. More intermediate transitional elements, skills and drops will be taught at this level working towards gaining more stamina in the fabric.  Students must be able to invert on their own and have their thigh hitch, double foot lock, same/opposite side catcher’s locks to enroll in this level class.

Level 3

At this advanced level, students will concentrate on advanced inversion skills, drops, and transitional skills.  Students must have clean straddle inversions, thigh hitch, hips keys, same/opposite side catcher’s locks and s-wraps to enroll in this level class. Prerequisite: Aerial Silks Level 2 or Iluminar teacher approval.

Trapeze Technique (Ages 12+)

Level 1

In this intermediate level technique class, students are becoming more comfortable in the air and will engage in learning intermediate skills, coning, spinning and transitional skills. Beginner inversions in the ropes will be introduced. Students must be able to pullover on the bar and have clean straddle inversions under the bar. Prerequisite: 12 week session of Air Essentials Intermediate or Iluminar teacher approval.

Level 2

In this upper intermediate level technique class, students are gaining more stamina and strength in the air and will engage in learning choreographic sequences on the trapeze.  Students will be introduced to more inversion skills in the ropes, transitions from one skill to the next in a seamless matter and will start to learn more dynamic moves. Students must be able to pullover cleanly on the bar,  have clean straddle inversions under the bar and in the ropes, have a clean sailor/dolphin in the ropes and can comfortably get to a x position in the ropes in an inversion. 

Prerequisite: 12 week session of Trapeze Level 1 or Iluminar teacher approval.

Partnering in the Air: Level 1 (Ages 12+)

This exciting class will introduce students to a first taste of partner work in the air.  Several different types of equipment will be utilized as students learn basic holds, locks, and the movement required to smoothly operate as a duet or trio. Aerial partner not required, but recommended!

Aerial Wall Dancing: Youth (ages 7-12 years) & Teen/Adult (ages 12+)

In this exciting new technique class offered at Iluminar (the only Colorado aerial studio to offer this technique), dancers will take to air and turn the dance floor on it’s side! Wall dancing or vertical dance refers to an aerial performance apparatus where performers are suspended in the air with a rope and a harness using the wall as the new floor to move and dance on. Using the same equipment as rock climbers, students will learn the basics of rigging, ascending, descending and wall safety.  Class will consist of conditioning drills on the ground to help strengthen essential abdominal muscles as well as technical exercises on the wall to help students become comfortable with a new spatial orientation. Once simple static positions have been acquired, students will explore the possibilities with the pendulum of the rope. Class will move on to learning choreography phrases that will help students combine their skills into one seamless dance. Class Requirements: Students must bring a bike helmet, closed toed shoes and long pants to participate in class. Knee pads are also recommended but not required.

Trampoline Basics (Ages 8+)

Come experience a whole new way to condition and learn some cool new tricks at the same time on our brand new, high performance trampoline! In our trampoline basics class, you will first learn proper jumping technique and body positions. After the basics have been learned, class will progress with more advanced skills like stomach and back drops,flipping and twisting techniques. Proper progressions will be given for each skill for students to learn in a safe and controlled environment. Trampoline develops air sense, body and spatial awareness, strength and is lots of fun!

Flex/Contortion (Ages 8+)

Take your flexibility training to the next level with this intensive flexibility and and contortion class! Our instructor will start off by assessing everyone’s flexibility level and will then base the class exercises off of each student. Throughout the session, the stretching exercises will focus on different areas of the body including back, shoulders, hip flexors and hamstrings. Strength exercises will also be implemented to not only increase each student’s flexibility but to help prevent injuries.

Beginner/Intermediate Contemporary Dance Technique (Ages 12+)

Come explore the contemporary dance world with the beginner level class for teens and adults of all ages and sizes. Beginning contemporary dance technique explores the principles of modern dance. Emphasis in placed on alignment, manipulation of the spine, locomotor skills, and phrasing. In this class students will be able to:

1. Participate in movement experiences to facilitate the discovery of vertical alignment and spinal articulation.

2. Explore gravity, rhythm, musicality, and the elements of space and time through various combinations and floor work.

3.Develop coordination skills of different body planes.

4. Utilize knowledge of the body for ease of motion and safety in this movement genre.

Ballet for Aerialists (Ages 12+)

Ballet for Aerialists is a beginning level class that introduces students to the principles of ballet. In this class we will emphasize alignment, articulation of the feet, locomotor skills, and phrasing. Class time will be composed of barre, center, and across-floor work.  In this class students will be able to:

1. Investigate individual range of motion in the feet, ankles, thighs, and hips within the ballet lexicon. 

2. Decipher the French ballet vocabulary and translate terms into movement.

3. Develop coordination skills of different body planes.

4. Recognize and appreciate the relationship between ballet and music.

5. Strengthen muscles and manage joint movements in order to dance safely and efficiently.

6. Relate concepts in ballet to other dance forms.

Flying Cloud Swing Technique: Mixed Level (Ages 12+)

Learn how to defy gravity and use the fun of swinging to perform your skills. Similar to flying trapeze, students will start with learning the proper swing technique and why it is useful. As students become more comfortable flying they will start to learn swinging skills, transitions, release moves and perform skills with the help and ease of the swing. A spotting line will be utilized for the safety of the students.  Prerequisite: Must be able to hold themselves up in a chin hold for at least 20 seconds, have clean inversions and are able to perform hip keys & thigh hitches in the air.
